چکیده

The Ulysses magnetic field experiment has measured the heliospheric magnetic field in solar wind flows from the Sun’s Southern polar coronal hole ovef a wide range of heliolatitudes and distances. We present an anatysis of more than one ym of data, covering a latitude range of 40° to 80°S and a distance range of 4.0 to 1.7 AU. We extend an earlier analysis of Utysses magnetic field data and, by calculating structure functions, demonstrate that the spectrum of fluctuations in the magnetic field changed atong the orbit of Ulysses within polar flows and that this change is a result of the variation in Ulysses’ distance from the Sun, rather than its latitude. We interpret this change as being due to the development of turbulence in the polar solar wind.

We investigate the plasma dynamics (outflow speed and turbulence) inside polar plumes. We compare line profiles (mainly of O VI) observed by the UVCS instrument on SOHO at the minimum of solar cycle 22-23 with model calculations. We consider Maxwellian velocity distributions with different widths in plume and inter-plume regions. Electron densities are assumed to be enhanced in plumes and to ap...

Solar cycle dependence of scaling in solar wind fluctuations

In this review we collate recent results for the statistical scaling properties of fluctuations in the solar wind with a view to synthesizing two descriptions: that of evolving MHD turbulence and that of a scaling signature of coronal origin that passively propagates with the solar wind. The scenario that emerges is that of coexistent signatures which map onto the well known “two component” pic...

The dynamical background of polar mesosphere winter echoes from simultaneous EISCAT and ESRAD observations

On 30 October 2004 during a strong solar proton event, layers of enhanced backscatter from altitudes between 55 and 75 km have been observed by both ESRAD (52 MHz) and the EISCAT VHF (224 MHz) radars. These echoes have earlier been termed Polar Mesosphere Winter Echoes, PMWE. After considering the morphology of the layers and their relation to observed atmospheric waves, we conclude that the ra...

Deciphering solar turbulence from sunspots records

It is generally believed that sunspots are the emergent part of magnetic flux tubes in the solar interior. These tubes are created at the base of the convection zone and rise to the surface due to their magnetic buoyancy. The motion of plasma in the convection zone being highly turbulent, the surface manifestation of sunspots may retain the signature of this turbulence, including its intermitte...

Direct evidence for kinetic effects associated with solar wind reconnection

Kinetic effects resulting from the two-fluid physics play a crucial role in the fast collisionless reconnection, which is a process to explosively release massive energy stored in magnetic fields in space and astrophysical plasmas. In-situ observations in the Earth's magnetosphere provide solid consistence with theoretical models on the point that kinetic effects are required in the collisionle...
